Build Muscle Up While Shedding Fat with HIIT
I bet you’ve heard it time and time again: it’s impossible to build muscle up and melt fat concurrently. They say that building mass involves an increase in calories, while fat burning involves a decrease in calories. This conventional wisdom is based in fact, but the beliefs are being shaken up with insights into interval training. The fact is, you can achieve muscle weight gain while you burn fat if you add intervals to your sessions.
Interval training isn’t completely new, but it’s more widely understood, accepted, and practiced as of late. Whereas traditional cardiovascular training were considered the only effective ways to burn fat, and the only effective workouts for endurance athletes, high intensity interval training (HIIT) has proven to be advantageous to athletes of all types, and for people with wildly varying goals.
Traditional aerobic activity is often referred to as “steady state,” which means that you work up to a fixed intensity level and maintain that level for the duration of the workout. During the training session, your body gains half of its energy by burning fat, and gets the rest through your oxygen system, and by dipping into your glycogen and muscle stores.
Interval sessions, on the other hand, consist of short high intensity intervals followed by moderate intensity recovery periods. HIIT sessions spare your muscles and are fast, but pack a wallop. A 15-minute HIIT workout can raise your resting metabolic rate for almost day, enabling you to continue burning higher levels of fat for up to a day.
In addition to this, because your muscles consume calories during every minute of the day, the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn, even while you’re sleeping. Because HIIT not only spares your muscle, but also helps you build muscle up, your future fat burning capacity is increased.
The bottom line is that regardless of your fitness goals, HIIT workouts can help you increase your overall level of fitness in very short sessions. Even better, if your goals include muscle building and fat shedding, adding HIIT to your workout schedule is a no-brainer.
