How Ashtanga Works
Ashtanga yoga can be described as “yoga as dance”. Ashtanga is believed to come directly from an ancient text called the Yoga Korunta, although those with some experience in the way Indian yoga “gurus” presented teachings within their traditional system question whether this is really true. The small fact that no-one has found the Yoga Korunta tends to support this. This doesn’t affect the legitimacy and benefits of Ashtanga, however. The Indian yoga system is itself changing and evolving. Thus Ashtanga is a legitimate modern development in the arena of yoga.
Ashtanga is also known as ashtanga vinyasa yoga.
The Basics of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
What sets ashtanga yoga apart is the dynamic connecting sequences that create a sense of flow and movement between the static postures of traditional yoga. There is also a specific sort of breathing that is done with each movement. A lot of focus is placed on the movements in between the postures instead of just the actual asanas.
Ashtanga yoga postures are a series of postures that are completed in the same sequence every time and performed with particular breathing patterns. Vinyasa is defined as movement synchronized with breath. The purpose of vinyasa is to increase circulation and sweating and thus purify the body. Vinyasa really improves flexibility, and tendon and muscle strength.
Ashtanga yoga is very physically demanding, and presupposes a certain level of fitness, and it is known to be helpful in mitigating hyperactivity in children. People who practice this style of yoga regularly can learn to calm their minds and focus on the present while learning how to respond better to stress.
To sum up, ashtanga is a popular type of yoga because of its long list of physical and mental health benefits. It is a popular practice that has become a modern way to get fit and it is a top way to relieve stress and stay in shape. If you want to find a relaxing way to get exercise and stay healthy, you could do a lot worse than trying ashtanga vinyasa yoga.
