The Benefits of Eating Alfalfa
Alfalfa, which is a perennial herb, has a long list of dietary and medicinal uses and research has proven that Alfalfa might lower blood levels of cholesterol and glucose. Alfalfa is a very safe herb to take however it’s been discovered that a very tiny number of people can suffer symptoms like lupus. L-canavanine is an amino acid that is present in the seeds and sprouts and it’s this which affects some people adversely. However, this is not present in the leaves of the Alfalfa. Overall Alfalfa is healthy.
Since the sixth century the Chinese have used Alfalfa to relieve fluid retention and swelling. The Arabs were the first to find Alfalfa and they named it “the father of all foods.” The leaves of the Alfalfa plant are very rich in minerals and nutrients, such as carotene, calcium, potassium and magnesium.
Not only does it help as a diuretic it’s also great as a laxative. It also works well for urinary tract infections, and kidney, bladder and prostrate disorders. A number of studies have been carried out and one of the latest findings is that it can help with cholesterol because there are certain agents in Alfalfa that stick to cholesterol which keeps it from remaining in the blood stream.
You don’t need to take Alfalfa in a pill form because you can quite happily eat it. It is good in salads and some people eat it as a vegetable all alone. Eating healthy is also important for caring for your skin.
Do you like drinking tea? Alfalfa makes a great tea because when the Alfalfa leaves steep in the hot water it is a source of nitrogen. If you enjoy gardening you might be interested to know that you can also feed the tea to your plants. Many with a green thumb also use Alfalfa as mulch for their flower beds.
